When you build in the UK, you need to comply with Building Regulations at the time of construction. For current documents see the Planning Portal Building Regulations section.
Builders and developers are required by law to obtain building control approval- an independent check that Building Regulations have been complied with. There are two main routes to building control approval:
- Local Authority Building Control through submission of a Full Plans Application or a Building Notice. Inspections by the Building Control Surveyor will happen throughout the works.
- Approved Inspectors -list of approved inspectors is kept by the Association of Corporate Approved Inspectors.
For certain type of work such as the installation of windows or boilers,
there is a third route: using a competent person
For a list of the existing schemes see the CLG.
