Behavioural changes in recent decades have seen an increase on commuting distances travelled, reliance on faster (more polluting) means of transport and patterns of dependence on fossil fuels.
Transport efficiency can be measured by vehicle efficiency, passenger or freight efficiency
and journey efficiency.
Cars efficiency has increased but, passenger efficiency decreased as has the use of public or non fuelled means of transport.
- Walking and cycling for short journeys.
- Using trains rather than planes for long intercity travel.
- Organizing car pooling schemes (of efficient vehicles, ideally powered by renewables)
